What Happens at a Pregnancy Center?

An unexpected pregnancy can bring up many different feelings, and if you live in the Clayton, Knightdale, and Zebulon areas, you likely want information and assistance without feeling pressured or judged. This is why we are available to you. If this is your first time visiting a pregnancy center, you may be anxious; we want to walk you through what to expect so you feel safe and secure during this uncertain time.

The First Visit

You will receive a free medical-grade urine pregnancy test to confirm your home test results on your first visit. Your pregnancy test results will be available at your appointment, which means no waiting for a phone call or letter in the mail. While you're waiting for your pregnancy test results, your client advocate will be with you. There will not be any clinical or professional questioning; rather, the client advocate will simply listen to and support you while you process your feelings about your pregnancy and your concerns moving forward. Everyone reacts differently to pregnancy test results. For example, you may have concerns about how to tell your parents or how this will impact your school and job.

We give you all the time you need to process your pregnancy test results. You won't be hurried from the office after you have received a positive result. Instead, we invite you to explore your pregnancy options. The staff will provide ample time to review all of your choices and give you factual information, including being a parent, creating an adoption plan, or having an abortion. Our center does not perform abortions and does not refer to abortion providers, but we believe you have the right to be informed about the risks and details associated with each option before making a decision. In order to be fully informed, you should have all the facts in front of you, not just a list of names and phone numbers.

Medical Confirmation and Safety

Your positive pregnancy test is only the beginning of your pregnancy journey. You should schedule a free limited ultrasound after obtaining a positive result, as this is a critical medical step. The results of the test alone do not provide sufficient information to keep you safe. Research indicates that between 10 and 20 percent of known pregnancies will end in miscarriage. A limited ultrasound will assist in determining if your pregnancy is viable by checking for a heartbeat, which suggests a higher chance of the pregnancy continuing. If a pregnancy is ending naturally, certain medical procedures might be unnecessary.

In addition to determining whether your pregnancy is viable, a limited ultrasound will also determine the location of your pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies occur in approximately 2 percent of all pregnancies, meaning the pregnancy is outside of the uterus. Ectopic pregnancies need to be treated urgently. Knowing your gestational age is important for determining your medical options. Using your last menstrual period to date your pregnancy may not be the most accurate method. We are providing these free services to help you learn more about your body so that you can make informed decisions regarding your pregnancy and what you would like to do next.

Ongoing Support and Resources

We provide continuing support and resources after you have completed your medical appointments. Many people have financial difficulties from unexpected pregnancies. We can educate you on childbirth and parenting and help you earn points that can be spent on supplies for your baby, including items such as cribs, car seats, clothing, and diapers. Using this earn-as-you-learn style of education can help provide the confidence needed to be a parent and lessen the fear of being newly pregnant. We also provide a dedicated fatherhood program because many fathers want to be positive supporters of their partners and children, but often need guidance on how to be a responsible and supportive partner or parent.

Many people need support following a past pregnancy; our center provides confidential care for those experiencing emotions like regret or sorrow associated with a prior abortion. If you need medical confirmation of your current pregnancy or emotional support associated with a past experience, we can help you. You can schedule an appointment at any time to talk with someone who cares about you and your future.
